About

What is cut edge corrosion?

Cut edge corrosion on metal roofs is a common issue in the UK, particularly affecting steel roofing and cladding systems. It occurs at the exposed edges of metal sheets where the protective coating has been cut or trimmed during installation. The process of cutting metal sheets exposes the underlying metal to the elements, leading to the breakdown of protective coatings such as galvanising or paint systems.

Common areas where cut edge corrosion is found include eaves, laps, and gutter edges. If left untreated, it can lead to leaks, structural damage, and costly repairs. Preventative measures and timely maintenance, such as applying edge protection treatments and ensuring proper sealing, are essential to mitigate the effects of cut edge corrosion and prolong the lifespan of metal roofing systems in the UK’s varied weather conditions.

Treatment Process

How we treat the corrosion

The process of repairing cut-edge corrosion starts with an initial site survey, where a detailed inspection of the areas can be assessed. After the survey, a meeting is held to discuss the scope of the work including the type of liquid system required, schedule key dates, and address any health and safety concerns related to the project. Once these details are confirmed, we can organise a start date for the work to be completed.

Inspection and Assessment

Our free site surveys will perform a safety assessment to identify potential hazards, ensuring all workers are equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, safety goggles, and harnesses for working at heights.

Surface Preparation

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the area around the corroded edges using a pressure washer or suitable cleaning agents to remove dirt, grease, and loose rust. Remove loose rust and any existing coatings that are peeling or flaking using a wire brush or mechanical grinder.

Priming

Apply a metal primer to the prepared areas, which helps to prevent further rusting and ensures better adhesion of the liquid system.

System Application

Apply the first coat of the liquid system using a brush or roller, ensuring even coverage over the treated edges and extending slightly beyond the damaged area to seal it thoroughly. Once the first coat has dried, apply a second coat to ensure durability and effective protection against future corrosion. Pay special attention to overlaps, fasteners, and joints, as these are common areas for water ingress and corrosion.

Inspection & Maintenance

After the system has fully cured, inspect the entire treated area to ensure complete coverage and proper adhesion. Address any missed spots or imperfections as needed.
